"Public" Art
What is "public" art? I have been fascinated by the political murals I saw in the 60s and 70s. I later learned these murals were preceded by those produced by the Mexican muralists forged during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920 and the cohort of Black artists of the 1930s through 1950s they mentored. Oakland is a City of murals - some explicitly political...some implicitly political... some figurative...some abstract. As I travelled around the City, I also saw statues which fit under the label of public art. But I also believe that many non-profit organizations use public-facing art that projects their values. Here are some of the pictures I made.
